Anyway, here we go:

I will post more as time goes on, but at the moment, that's all I have!

GeoTagger: works with most cameras

I just found this, and i want one! Its called a GeoTagger which connects to the Hot Shoe (usually used for External flash) on your camera and when you take photos, it records the GPS location of where the photo was taken, which way you where facing, and some other bits and peices. then, when you get home, you use software to link the 2 together and your sorted. pretty interesting idea. i have to get me one of these!

more new cameras from Photokina

2 new cameras from Photokina today. First is the Sigma SD14 DSLR, which is 14.1MP camera for about $1000. not too shabby. Next, we have the Hasselblad H3D. this is just mad. its a DSLR, and comes in both 22 and 39MP models! file sizes are up to 110mb per photo (which is about 80 photos on an 8Gb card, so you would want to carry a lot around) and will cost between $30 and $40k (depending on model). I think i will stick with my canon for a while.... [update] adding links... Doh!

Photokina releases for Monday

Ok, so Photokina starts tomorrow (Tueday), but a lot of things are being released today, or at least announced. so here are some links:

Fujifilm's FinePix S5 Pro DSLR and F31fd

Olympus' E-1 followup on display at Photokina

Kodak's EasyShare Z710: 7.1 megapixels and 10x zoom

Canon's Media Storage M30 and M80 photo and video viewers

Norcent's DC-10 -- 10 megapixels on the cheap

Apples Photokina event started

TUAW (the unofficial apple weblog) has some coverage of the Apple Photkia event. Aperture 1.5 released, more info comming.... [update] Well, more info about 1.5 is out, but we wont get our hands on it till "Later in the week" when ever that will be. Also, of note, Aperture will now work on a Mac Mini and a Mac Book. This is interesting, because originally you needed a minimum of a iMac because of the graphics card. now, pretty much anything will run Aperture! One issue: I have just ordered my Mac Pro with a gig of RAM, but the minimum RAM for a Mac Pro is now set at 2Gb! I will need to get the extra ram for it sooner rather then later...

new logos, what do you think

Since some of this site will be using Web2.0 features, and for the laugh also, i am thinking of using the following logos around the site. these will be over laid on the current images (of me in the mirror). Any thoughs? i havent done the overlay stuff just yet, because i dont want to spend time on that and find out it looks crap! :)

So, here is the front page logo (click to see the full version):

and here is the one for the blog (again, click for full text):

Fujifilm S3 Pro UVIR DSLR can see in the dark?

Fujifilm-s3-pro-uvirOk, this is a strange one. Fujifilm has announced a new S3 Pro camera: the S3 Pro UVIR DSLR. from what i can gather, it can take photos at night using either IR or UV. it has a special lens for this, which makes me wonder if you could get one of those “special” lenses for any camera? [via Engadget]

Canon 370D appears in China

Canon_370dIt seems that the sucessor to my Canon 350D has poped up in China. Its called the 370D, has a 10.1Megapixel sensor, 21 point auto focus, 7FPS rapid fire shooting (not sure for how long, but 7 up from 3 on the 350D is quite good) both CF AND SD support. Not totally sure if this is a real info, or fake, but if its real, its very nice. See the photo below (from Engadget) and see what you think…

Again, not sure the validity of this, so take it with a pinch of salt…

Looks interesting. personally, i am a canon man, but this has some nice features, like the 3FPS for 100 frames (33 seconds continuios shooting!) and the SD and SD-HC card format (SD-HC is a new SD format, faster with more storage). not sure about CF support though...

color photos from the world war 1 era

check out this "Damn Instesting" article about a photography who, in 1909 was taking color photos.

Color film was non-existent in 1909 Russia, yet in that year a photographer named Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii embarked on a photographic survey of his homeland and captured hundreds of photos in full, vivid color. His photographic plates were black and white, but he had developed an ingenious photographic technique which allowed him to use them to produce accurate color images.
Some very cool looking photos, pity they arent bigger though...

Adobe LightRoom: impressions so far

I just installed Adobe Light Room, and my impressions so far are not great. here are some problems:

1: if I am in the develop section, and I select 5 photos, change the exposure of the main one, and then do some other work, LightRoom only changes the info for the first one, not all.

2: too much space being used at the top for useless stuff. see pic below (click for larger image):

It seems to me that the AdobeLightroom logo can be removed, as it serves no major purpose, since you know where you are anyway, and same with the 4 different links. they could easily be somewhere else.

3: I cant seem to get it to copy settings from one single image to multiple images.

still playing with it, but so far, I can see why its beta. Interestingly enough, its Tiny! the download weighs in at a little under 7 Mb! Aperture is huge, and the executable is something like 30mb on its own!

Check out this post over at Aperture Tricks showing you how to rebuild your aperture library when it gets slow. I am currnently using a powerbook for all my photography needs because of Apple's Aperture. but my current problem is i havent got a lot of network storange for all my photos (currently hitting the 20Gb mark). the powerbook has hit a limit on storage too (currently got a 60Gb disc and only has about 8b free). so i am currently using my 60Gb black video iPod as a external HDD for backing up my Aperture valut, which works well. i still need proper network backup storage, but it wont be for a few months. just a bit of useless info for you there...

Droping your camera is not a good thing

Ok, im now not very happy. i dropped my camera. Its a Canon 350D, which had the Battery Grip and an 18-55mm lens on it at the time. the battery grid wont stay closed, and the camera wont go on unless i hold the little closing clip in place while i take photos, and the lens is completly f**ked. Now to try and get it either fixed or replaced. Mind you, the camera still works grand, just that lens and the battery sled. i have a sled for 6 AA batteries, which still works grand

Online photo galeries

I would like to set up a good online photo galery, with different things in it, as follows:

  • thumbnailed galerys (which shouldent be too hard to do, in theory)

  • ability to sell photos (incase i want to)

  • LOTS of meta data display, just because its handy

  • backend API, so i might be able to automate the uploading of images, etc

I have seen SmugMug and Flickr (which i use a lot) but SmugMug might be a little pricey for something i may try later, and Flickr does not allow hinding versions of photos (full size, for example). Any tips? the more technical question was posted here on my main blog, so if your a bit more technical, why not check it out. Tip: Getting the natural smile in your photos

first tip on the blog and its from Lifehacker.com telling you how to get natural smiles on your photos:

...count down 3-2-1-Cheese!, take one shot, and then take another shot immediately after. The smile in the first picture will often look stilted and posed, but there is usually a moment a split-second later when the model will relax and his smile will look much more natural.

there is a second sub tip there too:

Usually I go with the "make dumb jokes until subject doesn't realize you've taken 17 photos" approach which often nets out at least one good one, but that's just me.

Handy stuff. stay tuned for more!
